The commercial airline system is frustrating, inefficient, inconvenient, and uncomfortable. A recent AP story (August 6, 2007) reports that airline delays are at an all-time high. According to a Zagat survey (published in USA Today November 7, 2005), discontent with airlines is at an all time high.
Delays, cancellations and waiting were the number one complaint of 42% of respondents; cramped seating and crowding displeased 21% the most. Airlines are currently dependent upon large airports and runways, creating a problem they are helpless to fix.
According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, the average flight distance in the US is just over 600 miles. Harbor Aviation is ultimately aiming for the biggest segment of the air travel market: travel distances of less than 750 miles, delivering passengers faster, easier, and for costs that are affordable to the general public.
Runway independent aircraft provide the only feasible solution to the airport crisis. About 40% of runway traffic is from the smaller regional type aircraft, yet these aircraft only carry about 20% of the passenger traffic. By alleviating the need for small regional aircraft to use airports, larger long range aircraft will have more capacity at limited airport facilities.
